Building a Robust Industrial Network with VistoTek's Self-Healing Ring

Challenge

  • In complex industrial environments, maintaining uninterrupted communication among multiple PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) is essential for ensuring process stability and operational efficiency. For a large-scale production site encompassing multiple control units—including gasification, material loading, and environmental control stations—network reliability becomes even more critical. Traditional network topologies often fall short when exposed to harsh environments or unexpected link failures, resulting in costly downtimes and data loss.

Why Vistotek

VistoTek specializes in industrial networking solutions designed to thrive in mission-critical applications. Our switches are built to withstand challenging conditions while ensuring seamless communication. In this deployment, VistoTek provided a powerful solution with:

  • Self-Healing Ring Network Technology: Enables automatic failover in milliseconds to maintain connectivity.
  • Industrial M12 Interfaces: Rugged, vibration-resistant connectors ensure cable integrity in harsh environments.
  • Wall-mounted Switch Options: Seamless integration for stations requiring distributed and secure installations.
  • Full Support for PLC Networking: Reliable connectivity for every control station in the system.

Case Study

A major industrial client required a high-reliability communication network connecting several PLCs distributed across different operational zones:

  • Central Control PLC
  • Gasification Station PLC
  • Bulk Material Loading PLC
  • Raw Material Loading PLC
  • Circulating Water Station PLC
  • Gas Recovery Station PLC
  • Dry Dust Removal Station PLC

Due to the nature of the environment, certain PLCs were connected to the backbone network using wall-mounted M12 industrial switches, which provided ruggedized connectivity in locations prone to vibration, dust, and moisture.

Topology

At the core of the network were multiple VTK-I3084GS industrial switches connected in a ring topology, utilizing VistoTek’s self-healing protocol. Each VTK-I3084GS switch aggregated traffic from several PLCs and forwarded it across the ring.

The switches formed a high-speed fiber-based ring that ensured that, in the event of a break in any link, the traffic would be rerouted almost instantly with millisecond-level failover, keeping all stations online.

Result

The deployment of VistoTek’s solution achieved:

  • Zero downtime during simulated network faults, thanks to the fast self-healing mechanism.
  • Stable long-term operation under high EMI and vibration environments.
  • Simplified maintenance through centralized diagnostics and robust connector designs.
  • Flexible scaling for future PLC stations without redesigning the core network.

The client reported improved system reliability and a significant reduction in network-related production halts.
